THIS MONTH’S FLOWERS

& CARE TIPS

What’s in my bunch?

August’s Monthly Flower Fix consists of:

  • Nicotiana

  • Scabious

  • Echinops

  • Amaranthus

  • Weigela foliage.

If your heating is on or you have an open fire, please remember to place your flowers away from these direct heat sources! Central heating really reduces the life of cut flowers.

Follow the care guidance below, regarding re-cutting and fresh water, to ensure the longest possible vase life.

What should I do with my packaging?

We use packaging that doesn’t create a mountain of waste and, visually, doesn’t overpower the flowers.

The white paper and sticker can be recycled, whilst the grosgrain ribbon is intentionally unbranded so that it is more versatile for reuse.

Those of you receiving our flowers by courier, you will see some extra packaging to ensure the flowers arrive in the best possible condition.

The flowers will arrive with their stems in a gel to keep them hydrated. Flowers should only be left in the gel for up to 72 hours, so remove the stems from the gel and rinse it off down the sink, or put it on the compost, before re-cutting the stems. It is non-toxic and miscible with water.

The cellophane used to hold the gel is biodegradable.

How should I look after them?

Our flowers are always seasonal, meaning they’re in their natural prime, and have been well conditioned, so should last well. However, there are things you can do to help them last as long as possible.

  • Use a very clean vase;

  • Use fresh water;

  • Cut the stems on an angle;

  • Remove all leaves below the waterline.

Repeat the above steps frequently. We do ours about every 3 days. Keeping the water, vase and stems clean and fresh is the best way to extend vase life.

Other things you can do include:

  • Cut a slit up woodier stems to aid water uptake;

  • Keep flowers away from heat sources (radiators, fridges, tv’s etc);

  • Keep flowers away from fruit. Ripening fruit emits ethylene gas, which can cause cut flowers to age more rapidly.
